Yes on Question 6: Truth, Transparency, and Accuracy in Maine’s Constitution
November 7th is election day and there are a few important questions on this year’s ballot. One of those questions is Question 6.
WHAT IS QUESTION 6?
Question 6 is a referendum question that pertains to the top of tribal sovereignty in Maine. More than 100 years ago, the state of Maine stopped printing the complete version of the Maine Constitution. Missing sections include language about Maine’s original treaty obligations to the Wabanaki.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
The history of the relationship between tribal nations and the state of Maine should be included in every written and printed version of Maine’s constitution. Not only is this a way for people to understand history, it is also a means to hold the state government accountable to the treaty obligations.
The Wabanaki’s history deserves to be respected, and the missing sections including information about Maine’s original treaty obligations is unacceptable and must be rectified immediately. This election day, make sure to vote “YES” on question 6 to ensure that the rights and history of the Wabanaki are respected and upheld.
